  • Gabriel Cancela åkte ur semifinalen i Idol 2017

  • ’Star Wars’ Character Accidentally Auditions for ’American Idol’

    By Anna Rumer – November 30, 2017

This American Idol contestant is out of this world!

Star Wars droid BB-8 stumbles into an audition and wins over reality singing show judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie in an adorable new promo shared with PEOPLE.

Trying to escape some menacing stormtroopers, BB-8 accidentally rolls onto the ABC set.

“You got an interesting look,” says Perry. “I like it.”

Richie adds, “You’re a little pitchy, but I think we can work with ya.”

”You’ve got a great stage presence,” Bryan adds. ”I think we could hang out a bit.”

With that, the droid earns himself a ticket to Hollywood!

The new American Idol judges are already calling themselves the dream team, Perry revealed during a recent sit-down with Universal Music Group.

“We all have our strengths and I think that we are a very diverse panel and I think we all can give a different perspective,” she said. ”Lionel tells a lot of incredible stories and people come in singing Whitney and Prince, and he’s like, ‘Oh, well, those are my homies.’ ”

Bryan said the group is already like family.

“To be on this ride with them and to see how serious they take it and how important it is. It’s an undertaking and a challenge that, when I started saying my opinion on the first day and they started agreeing with it, I was like, ‘Hell yes, I’m gonna be okay. We’re on the same page,’” he said. “I was very flattered that I could come in and be the ole country boy voice. But back to them, I mean obviously huge fans of everything that they’ve done from the word go.”

Auditions kicked off in August in Portland, Oregon, traveling to 23 different cities. Fans also can audition this year online or using the hashtag #TheNextIdol.

”We have a lot of fun, obviously, but we are really looking for talent and talent is presenting itself,” Perry said. ”It’s funny because I kept on saying I think that everything’s been discovered, every stone has been turned, every diamond has been polished, and I feel like actually we’re finding pretty great stuff.”

  • ’American Idol’ Reveals Its First Finalist

    November 21, 2017 10:14AM PT

“American Idol” awarded its first Golden Ticket to Hollywood during Monday night’s “Dancing With the Stars” finale on ABC.

New judge Lionel Richie was on hand to announce that Britney Holmes, a 28-year-old vocal coach from Texas, is headed to Hollywood.

Richie was joined by all three contestants — Holmes, 18-year-old Maris from Montana, and 21-year-old Dominique Smith from Brooklyn — as he channeled host Ryan Seacrest to make the announcement.

All three hopefuls had already auditioned for the judges, but didn’t make it through. Each judge — Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan — used a save to bring them back for another try in front of America. The auditions aired during commercial breaks on Sunday night’s American Music Awards, with fans given the opportunity to vote through the show’s website.

Holmes was Perry’s pick for another shot — and America sided with that recommendation.

How did Richie do for his first live “Idol” duties? “Dancing With the Stars” host Tom Bergeron gave him a rave review, stating, “You’ve already got that wonderful reality show dramatic pause down!”

“American Idol” premieres March 11 on ABC.

  • ’American Idol’ Lets Audience Send One Hopeful to Hollywood During American …

“American Idol” got off to an early start during the American Music Awards live broadcast Sunday night (Nov. 19) as the public was given a rare opportunity to override the judges panel and award one of three hopefuls a Golden Ticket to Hollywood.

“Tonight the ‘American Idol’ journey begins,” said “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest in the first spot that aired during the show. “Right here, right now. This is ‘American Idol.’”

Seacrest explained that the three singers did not make it through to the next round, but a second chance would be granted via public fan vote, which will be tabulated until the voting closes. The results will be revealed on Monday night on “Dancing with the Stars.”

Voters at home were given the power to select one of three contestants — each individually introduced by judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie — to advance.

First up was Britney Holmes, a 28-year-old Texas vocal coach from Aubrey, Tex. Holmes was introduced by Perry before she sang a few lines of “Let it Go,” by James Bay.

“She came to audition in Nashville, and she had an incredible voice,” Perry said. “We want to give her one more shot.”
In Holmes’ full audition — available on the American Idol website — she is accompanied by a piano and standing center stage. Dressed simply in a yellow top and torn jeans, Holmes gave a sweet and nuanced version of the song, holding the last note in a soft fade.

18-year-old Maris from Missoula, Mont. auditioned in New York, according to Bryan.

“She is someone that didn’t quite make it, but she was somebody I wanted to bring back,” he said in the longer version of the audition in an online video.

Dressed in a black jacket and black checked pants, Maris took a big gamble performing the 1961 Etta James/Riley Hampton-penned torch song “Fool That I Am.” Maris, with her short, stylish hair and a flair for dramatic presentation, has the makings of an interesting contestant.

Dominique Smith, age 21, from Brooklyn, N.Y., completed the performances with an introduction by Richie, who said that “her voice just blew us away.”

“We had to bring her back,” he said.

Smith — who chose a classic pink dress and heels — wrapped her soulful voice around Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” (first performed on Season 10 by third-place runner-up Haley Reinhart) for an audition that was classic “Idol.”

The fate of all three singers hang in the balance tonight, with the public now given the chance to vote online at AmericanIdol.com/Vote.

“Let’s make some dreams come true,” said AMA host Tracee Ellis Ross.

“American Idol” is set to premiere March 11 p.m. EST on ABC.

  • Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan Will be Kinder, Gentler ’American Idol …

After nearly an 18-month hiatus since its “final” show last April on Fox, “American Idol” is coming back to television this spring, on ABC, and the new “Idol” crew has been traveling the country taping auditions – both with and without judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. But the triumvirate was complete in Hollywood, Calif. Thursday evening to kick off the first season of the new version of the former Fox reality giant with ABC’s corporate partner Disney announcing it will release the finalists’ album on its Hollywood Records label.

When asked which of the three would take the role of Simon Cowell, the trio immediately chimed in that none of them would.

“We’re artists, not record company executives or critics,” insisted Luke Bryan to Variety. “These 15- and 16 year-olds are still a couple of years away, but you can see their promise, the potential. We’re not there to discourage them. If we word it wrong, they may give up all up.”

Perry agreed, adding that they are “about giving constructive criticism.” Though she still admitted the acerbic Cowell is her favorite judge, she noted that the sensitive nature not only of the youth of contestants but of today’s cultural in general will be reflected in the show. “Young kids take things to heart. I can be sarcastic as all get out, and even a little snarky,” she said. “Like Simon, I’m also a truth-teller, a straight shooter. But at the end of the day, I’m not here to tell anyone they suck. It’s not about that.”

Richie noted that though the trio are judges, they are also producers, and that factors into how they will talk to the talent on the show. “Imagine I’m producing Diana Ross. I will tell her just enough truth to inspire her to give me more in the studio,” he explained.

Whether or not “American Idol” can recapture the zeitgeist with a new iteration in a world where any kid with an iPhone or laptop can upload his or her performance to YouTube and overnight turn into a viral sensation will remain to be seen. But perhaps because of new technology, the abundance of emerging artists is stronger than ever.

“The show is coming back at a perfect time,” insisted Perry. “There’s just too much choice out there. You don’t know who to focus on.”

Richie, who Perry has jokingly dubbed “the dad-slash-chaperson” of the group added that the show “is like a filter where only the strong survive.” He noted that if he had to go through the process “Idol” contestants embark upon with rounds of auditions and live shows, he “would have fainted on the spot. “I was so shy as a 15-year-old. I didn’t have the confidence to walk out on that stage and do what these kids do,” he shared.

Richie says that the “Idol” regimen is reminiscent of the heyday of Berry Gordy’s Motown assembly line, “but not quite as brutal. They wouldn’t invite you in the front door without a hint of something brilliant.”

Meanwhile, Bryan has been inspired by the audition process to up his own game. “We’ll tell these contestants
to give us all they’ve got, and then I find myself asking myself the same thing. When you hear that God has laid his hand on these people’s voices, it makes you want to go out and be a better artist yourself.”

“American Idol” premieres Mar. 11 on ABC.

  • Lions receiver Marvin Jones Jr. went on ’American Idol’ and blew Katy Perry away

Lions receiver Marvin Jones Jr. is on pace for a career-best season, and now he’s impressing judges on American Idol.

Jones auditioned in Nashville over the summer and now the world is getting to see how it went. This wasn’t part of the normal American Idol auditions, as Jones was unable to move on to Hollywood to compete due to his commitments to the Lions — but he proved he has the singing chops to have a career after football.

Katy Perry, in particular, was blown away by his voice, asking why he didn’t try to have a career in music rather than football. It didn’t take Luke Bryan long to answer from the judge’s desk, saying that not every musician can run a 4.3 40-yard dash.

  • ’American Idol’ Sets March 2018 Date for Reboot

Less than two years after it went off the air, American Idol has set its return date on ABC: March 11.

Original host Ryan Seacrest broke the news on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Monday morning (Nov. 6) and judge Katy Perry confirmed it on Instagram a short time later, via a moody Star Wars-style portrait of a smiling Ryan with the new three-judge panel, which also includes Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

Auditions for the reboot have been taking place around the nation for the past three months at 23 stops, and the premiere episode will be a two-hour show beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The show, which debuted on the Fox network in 2002 and quickly became a ratings juggernaut that spun off such megastars as Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry, went off the air in April 2016 amid sagging ratings and increased ratings competition for NBC’s The Voice.

Speaking of the panel’s chemistry back in October when the cast was first revealed, Perry said, ”This is the dream team. I think there is still talent out there to be discovered. I mean, we live in the age of the Internet. The music industry is constantly changing, it’s in flux right now. I think there are still stars, and diamonds in the rough. I think the great American dream, we can revive that in a way and show people that if they have the talent, if they work really hard and if we can give them that lucky star and the combination of those three things, maybe we can give them kind of like a little platform to just shine… we’re here to really make dreams come true, and to hopefully find that American Idol.”
