Luke Bryan on Judging the New American Idol: ’I Don’t Think I Would Have Made …

He may be a chart-topping country superstar now, but Luke Bryan has doubts about how he’d have made out on a TV talent competition.

Chatting with Kellie Pickler and Ben Aaron on the red carpet of the 2017 CMA Awards, Bryan, 41, dished on his new role as a judge on the highly anticipated ABC reboot of American Idol.

“The thing about me, Katy and Lionel is that we’re all performers, we’re not like big music executives,” said Bryan when asked if he’ll be the Simon Cowell of the new crew.

Already in the midst of fielding thousands of hopeful singers, Bryan said his hat’s off to the courageous young talent the judges have seen so far.

“When I was just starting out 16, 17, just starting out, I don’t think I would have made it through anything like that, or gotten to Hollywood. I just wasn’t ready.”

But Bryan said he and his fellow judges are practicing tough love on some of the performers. “We don’t want to send kids through to just get beat out by some more experienced singers,” said Bryan. “There was one girl we met, she was so good, we sent her to the next round and she actually fell off of the stage during her audition and didn’t make it through. But she came back and auditioned again and sang her heart out.”

Bryan himself is up for Entertainer of the Year and taking the stage inside the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Earlier in the night he was joined on the red carpet by wife Caroline. The pair made headlines earlier this week, opening up about taking in Bryan’s teenage nephew Til after the singer lost his sister and brother-in-law.
